Complementing its mission to end homelessness for women and children, Women’s Empowerment’s Get A Job Kit training program is an effective pathway to employment for homeless women encountering barriers to securing work. In this paid training program, graduates of the Women’s Empowerment program develop workplace skills as they produce the award-winning Get A Job Kit, an all-in-one career organizer which has helped thousands of job-seekers find employment.
Too often, women who are homeless must turn down necessary job training because it is unpaid—and as a result, they are unable to develop job skills and pay their bills. However, Women’s Empowerment’s Get A Job Kit paid training program allows women who are homeless to develop advanced job skills and professional know-how while receiving a stipend, improving their chances to secure lasting employment. The Women’s Empowerment graduates who manufacture The Get A Job Kit cultivate a variety of job-ready skills to help them in their job searches, including:
- quality assurance
- receiving and shipping
- customer service
Additionally, participants in the program receive training focused in workplace safety, workplace harassment, labor standards, conflict resolution, and personal and professional boundaries, among other highly valued skills needed in the workplace.
Since Women’s Empowerment began offering its Get A Job Kit training program, eighty-nine women who were once homeless have completed the paid training, and 70% are now employed.
The Get A Job Kit was donated to Women’s Empowerment in 2014 by Shirley Willey, owner of Etiquette & Company, who created and originally manufactured the Kit. Under her guidance, the Kit helped thousands of job-seekers—including many of Women’s Empowerment’s students—secure employment and thrive.
